Varicose veins and spider veins are not just a cosmetic concern — they can cause aching, heaviness, swelling, and night cramps, and they tend to worsen with time, pregnancy, long-haul flights, and a desk-bound lifestyle. At About.Skin in Dubai, we offer the two leading minimally-invasive options for vein removal: laser ablation and sclerotherapy. Both are performed by a vascular-trained physician, both leave smoother, lighter legs, and both fit comfortably into a Dubai professional’s schedule.
Varicose Veins vs Spider Veins
Varicose veins are larger, twisted, bulging veins — usually blue or dark purple — that bulge above the skin surface, most often on the calves and thighs. They form when the one-way valves inside the vein fail and blood pools backward.

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are smaller, finer, red or purple “starburst” patterns close to the surface. They are mostly cosmetic but can also cause discomfort.
Both respond well to modern, in-clinic treatment.
Treatment Option 1: Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment for spider veins and small-to-medium varicose veins. A sclerosing solution (most often polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulphate) is injected directly into the vein with a very fine needle. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and seal. Over weeks, the body absorbs the closed vein and it disappears.
Treatment Option 2: Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
For larger varicose veins — particularly truncal veins like the great or small saphenous — endovenous laser ablation is the modern alternative to surgical “stripping.” A thin laser fibre is introduced into the vein under ultrasound guidance and gently withdrawn while emitting heat that closes the vein from inside. Healthy veins take over circulation within days.
Benefits of Modern Vein Removal
- Minimally invasive — performed in a clinic, not an operating theatre
- Local anaesthesia only — no general anaesthetic, no hospital stay
- Walk-in, walk-out — most patients walk straight after the procedure
- Quick recovery — back to office in 24–48 hours; full activity within a week
- Long-lasting results — properly treated veins do not return; new veins may, which is why follow-up is part of the plan
- Symptom relief — heaviness, aching, and swelling typically improve along with cosmetic appearance
Who Is It For?
Vein treatment is suitable for adults who have:
- Visible varicose veins or spider veins on the legs, ankles, or thighs
- Aching, heaviness, swelling, restless legs, or night cramps
- Itching or skin discolouration around long-standing varicose veins
- A desire to wear shorts and dresses without self-consciousness
It is not suitable during pregnancy, in patients with active deep vein thrombosis, or with certain blood-clotting disorders. A duplex ultrasound scan is performed first to map the veins and confirm safety.
The Process at About.Skin
- Consultation & ultrasound mapping — your veins are scanned and the optimal treatment plan agreed
- Treatment — sclerotherapy injections take 20–30 minutes; laser ablation takes 45–60 minutes
- Compression stockings — worn for 1–2 weeks after treatment to support healing
- Walking schedule — light walking from the same day to keep circulation moving
- Follow-up — at 2 and 6 weeks to confirm closure and plan any additional sessions
Results & Aftercare
Spider veins typically need 1–3 sclerotherapy sessions; varicose veins often need a single laser ablation followed by sclerotherapy of any residual surface branches. Veins fade gradually over 4 to 12 weeks. Aftercare is straightforward: compression stockings, daily walking, no hot baths or sauna for 2 weeks, and avoiding long flights for 4 weeks if possible.
We welcome all skin types
About.Skin is built for the beautifully diverse community of Dubai. Every plan starts with a face-to-face assessment by a DHA-licensed dermatologist or aesthetic specialist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the procedure painful? Sclerotherapy feels like small injections; laser ablation is performed under local anaesthesia and is well-tolerated.
Will the veins come back? Treated veins do not reopen. New varicosities can appear over time, especially with pregnancy or prolonged standing — this is why we recommend periodic check-ups.
How soon can I exercise? Light walking the same day; avoid heavy gym, running, and weights for 1 week.
Can men have it too? Absolutely — varicose veins affect both men and women.
